he writer of the book of Hebrews encourages his listeners with some vital things to take care of in their Christian walk. The first few verses of chapter twelve draw a comparison between living the life and running a race. He first says that we must lay aside anything that slows us down and get rid of any sin holding us back. We know that Jesus’ blood ultimately takes away sin, but apparently we have to do our part as well. First we have to decide we want to strip away everything that impairs our relationship with the Savior. We can’t afford to hang on to any old attitudes or sins that really aren’t from the mind of Christ. They only hold us back.
He also points out that we must keep our eyes on Jesus Christ. He is the only one who went to the cross and the only one with all authority. This is another thing that we have to do. We have to decide to not be distracted by things that aren’t eternal. We need to put on our “spiritual blinders” so that we stay focused on the Savior and the one relationship in life we absolutely can’t live without. We Christians have to be in the world but not of it. We will always be tempted to notice other’s lack of zeal and faithfulness or fret over injustices we see. Neither life nor people are under our complete control so disappointment is always available. We have to choose to look to Christ who was never distracted from His mission to seek and save the lost.
We are also urged to keep in mind the trials Jesus endured. His perfect example inspires us to not lose heart in the face of hostility or ridicule. The devil is fond of using criticism and rude people to rob us of the joy and freedom that is ours in Christ. Jesus suffered terrible attacks from within His own group of followers as well as from those who openly despised His very existence. He kept His strength and clarity of mission by spending time with the Father in prayer. He shows us how to live through adversity by submission to God’s will. We need to keep His example in mind. We need to consider Jesus.
The Hillside missions group completed a trip to Show-Me Christian Youth Home in Camdenton last Saturday. Nineteen workers went and spent the day helping with the needs of the home. They worked hard and had a good trip.
This Saturday evening the Hillside family will gather at the Bell’s residence for our annual fall cookout. Starting at 5:00 pm the fun and fellowship will begin and last through the evening. This event is one that people look forward to all year. After all the activities and food, the gathering around the bonfire for singing and fellowship is the highpoint of the evening.
Planning is going forward for the Children’s Fall Festival to be held October 31st at the church. Lots of fun activities are in the works for kids from nursery through 6th grade. There will be lots of candy and other treats for any children who come. The games will cover all ages and be supervised to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.
