unday was missionary day at Hillside Christian Church. Many missions are supported financially by regular contributions. We were pleased to have Norman and Patty Maddox who have been missionaries in a metropolitan Brazilian city for the past three decades. Sunday morning Norman talked of their work in Brazil, and his current fight with bone cancer. Sunday evening we enjoyed hearing from Jim and Terry Riley, missionaries from Honduras. They oversee a vital and active college age church and fellowship mission.
The sermon text was taken from Luke 24. On the day of the resurrection, Cleopas and a friend were walking back to Jerusalem. When they encountered Jesus, they did not recognize who he was. Only after they broke bread with him, and he recounted the prophecies from Moses to the current day, did they recognize him. Until they understood and knew who he was, they were still weak and afraid. This example teaches us the importance of living in light of the resurrected Lord and his personal presence. It takes more than facts and spiritual experiences to truly be empowered. We must have a personal relationship with the living Lord Jesus.
