Last Sunday was a big day of "Firsts" for the Hillside church family. Work on the education addition was far enough along to allow us to meet for worship services in the new area for the first time. The design of construction has enabled us to do a good deal of the work without much impact on the rest of the building. It was the first time for many in attendance to actually be in the new area and look around. Many were surprised at the size of the space being created and were excited about what completing the work will mean to our church and ministry. We "roughed it" for a Sunday to bring everyone up to date and challenge them to help finish the project.

Our theme for the day's messages came from Paul's letter to the Corinthian church. He was writing to help them get over a division in their group. Paul reminded them that they were really God's building or temple and that they were built on Christ. This truth applies to anything we build in our lives as Christians. Whether it is a physical structure or a spiritual relationship, there simply is no other solid basis to build upon other than Jesus Himself. Any idea or person, no matter how seemingly worthy or noble, is insufficient and may be a counterfeit. The Corinthian's were claiming some sort of extra notoriety based on who had led them to Christ. They were laying a false foundation above the true one. False foundations won't support a saving faith or much of a building.

Our lives are continuously being built as we live. Some people don't find out until it's too late that they are really hanging in thin air. Their belief system they have relied on for years proves to be faulty and everything is called into question. Thinking humans owe it to themselves to make some serious journeys into their beliefs and thought patterns. The work is hard, but vital to learning what truly motivates us to be and think the way we do. There is no real, lasting strength in partial truth. There is eternal strength in God's perfect truth. Jesus of Nazareth, God's Son, is God's revelation of the perfect truth about Himself. You can afford to be sure.

You may not be using bricks or boards, but you are building. Maybe a life with all its relationships, or a future you aren't sure of. Do the work. Find out what you're building on. Christ is the bedrock; be wise, only build on Him.
